Feeling VERY proud of myself

Right at the beginning of all this I talked to a lady in the village whose husband had dementia (I didn't know and it was almost my very first ever conversation with her) and she told me how at that point she was doing everything; chopping logs, getting the coal in, decorating, all those jobs that are usually shared out in a relationship.  I couldn't imagine it and had no idea where I would begin with most of the things Ash did.  At the end of last week the pull switch in the bathroom stopped working so we went to buy a replacement unit and yesterday tried to fit it.  Ash took the old one down and put the new one in its place but no joy, still no light.  We were however covered in dust (house built circa 1830 so no plasterboard ceilings for us) and it was getting dark so, rather than grope around in the gloom, we decided to leave it until daylight and then get someone to look at it.  Last night I studied the instructions for myself and this morning decided to have another go.  Luckily we'd bought two units as we've been without a light in the shower room for about five years so thought we'd have a go at both.  I say 'luckily' because I had the bright idea of swapping the units so, without saying anything to Ash, I did just that and 'hey presto' we now have a beautiful bright bathroom (it took me twice as long as it would have taken him in the old days but still ......).  Still no light in the shower room but after five years we're used to that so can cope and this whole episode has sent my confidence one notch higher.  Ash was ok with it all too as his strength was needed to screw it all to the ceiling and, funnily enough, I think it's a bit of a relief to him that the responsibility for everything no longer falls solely on him.  I'm also realising however that living in an old cottage when you don't have a DIYer alongside you can become an expensive business if you don't put your mind to learning new skills.

Very impressed! Anything electrical freaks me out so I'd really have to put on my big girl knickers for that one!

it's amazing what you can do when there's no other option.

Very impressed! - I very much doubt I would have had the skill or confidence to attempt that - would have been a phone call to a friend to come and help!

I had the phone number of a friend ready just in case but Youtube came to the rescue just in time.
