First a short rant ....

I read a reply on facebook this morning which was a response to a short conversation on dementia.  The person replying said 'I think it's important to let people know it's ok to forget and then remind them gently' which had me shouting at the computer screen 'if only that was the problem'.  Importantly though I then reminded myself that a long time ago I thought dementia was about forgetting stuff and it was only much, much later I realised there was far more to it than that however the three main stories of today so far are to do with memory so what do I know.  This morning Ash had two breakfasts.  The 6 year old does this too but that's because he wakes up early, has first breakfast then is ready for another a couple of hours later whereas Ash had no idea he'd eaten half an hour earlier so set to and made exactly the same breakfast meal he'd already consumed.  Then there was the bread loaf.  He'd fetched one from the freezer and put it on the window sill in the sunshine to defrost before lunch.  Ten minutes later I walked into the kitchen to find another frozen bread loaf sitting on top of the bread bin.  Quietly put one that one back and left the one we needed.  Then there were the pans piled at the side of the sink waiting to be washed while I was unloading the dishwasher.  Ash walked in and offered to wash the offending pans when I'd finished what I was doing and had moved out of the way.  Five minutes later I went to tell him he could now wash up, a statement which caused him to look at me with total incomprehension in his eyes.  Within five minutes he'd forgotten his offer.  Think this could be a very long day.

On the plus side I've fished out my ski thermals and am toasty warm even without heating so am now considering whether this is a way forward on the economy drive front.  Think probably not but you never know.  I was surprised how warm I was as soon as I put the thermals on but then remembered they kept me from hypothermia when we skied in -32 while in Alberta, Canada one holiday so they really should be able to cope with an unheated house in Britain I think.

Hi Jane

I think that deserves a big rant! As if nobody ever thought of reminding them! So little understanding of the condition in the general public. Makes me want to rant and I haven't even seen the post!

I know David but then that must be our mission - to get the message out there, to get people talking about it and to get people to understand that loss of memory is the least of the issues surrounding dementia.

Further to the eating 2 breakfasts as well as forgetting they have eaten also be aware which i am sure you are that also they can often think that they have eaten when they haven't , hence the weight loss in some cases.

Had that the other week Brenda with lunch. Just the once but I did notice. Luckily though I'm always here at breakfast and evening meal and he's in such a routine that these are the only times it's happened. will keep an eye on it though.
