A good day was had by all

It turns out that L is a miracle worker.  Once upon a time Ash did all the cooking in this house but since dementia came calling he's done less and less and, over the past two years at least, none at all.  Today I suggested to L that if she could make cheese scones for Ash he would be her friend for life.  Came home to find that not only had she made them. but they'd made them together!! To say I was stunned is an understatement.  He'd also been very chatty, told her all about the work he's done on the house over the years, shown here around the village and, all in all, they'd had a lovely day.

Mine was the most relaxing time away from Ash that I've had in years.  I didn't worry about him at all and surprisingly, for me at least, I didn't spend any time wondering what he was doing.  Instead I wandered around Lincoln checking out shops, trying on shoes and doing all the things that I usually absolutely hate doing and there were two main reasons for the enjoyment I think.  The first was that in reality (rather than just in my head) I can now fit into the clothes I like and the second was that lockdown isn't quite over and so the shops were almost empty which is just how I like them.

A resounding success then on all sides and one that I plan to repeat, with slight variations, next week.

Oh, and just in case you're interested, I bought a pair of flip flops, a pair of shoes, a pair of boots (in the sale so couldn't be ignored) and a gilet.

Thankyou for sharing Jane. You really do prove that with the right attitude and good planning it is possible for both partners in this dementia relationship to have good times. I feel lighter at heart for reading it. May you both have many more days like this. XX

I hope I do too Carol. Am treading very carefully with it all because I'm well aware that if I mess it up it will all take a great deal of rebuilding so even though I'm tempted to rush it and get more time to myself I'm determined to keep myself in check.

I can certainly let you have my recipe but have a feeling that L's is far superior. She and Ash made the on Thursday and they were all gone by Saturday morning. My recipe is as follows (weights are in UK measures):

8 ozs self raising flour
2 ozs butter
4 ozs cheddar cheese
150 ml milk
salt and pepper

Put the flour in a bowl and add the salt, pepper and butter, rubbing the butter in until it all looks like fine breadcrumbs.
Grate the cheese then add to the flour and and fold in.
Add the milk in stages (you probably won't need all of it) and then mix to create a dough
Flatten the dough a little and cut into rounds.
Brush the dough with milk and then top with more grated cheese

Bake at gas 6 for 15 minutes.

I've fiddled around with the recipe until it's exactly as I want it so you might have to do the same. Good luck and let me know how you get on.
